Hot NaOh solution
« on: November 03, 2010, 04:07:52 AM »
Hello!

I heard that NaOH solution, when heat in oven, will turn the glass "misty" .This means it will react with the glss, right?

I had asked in the forum in the past if vapors of basic solutions are alkalic, and I took the answer "No" for nonvolatile salts. Isn't NaoH a nonvolatile salt?

What about Sodium Bicarbonate solution or salt crystals?

Does the same happens? (active vapors?)

        Thanks a lot in advance!

when you heat something it may become a gas

this can be quite different from room temperature

you are asking very general questions which may be different for each compound you look at

therefor you are recieving very general answers

sodium hydroxide has different base properties to sodium bicarbonate

thanks a lot for the answer!

So you guess that the vpours of the crystals react and not the vapours of the solution.

        I understand,thank you!

Are you saying that the NaOH solution is in a glass cup and you heat it?
I have heard the same thing given a long enough time.

But if you were to melt NaOH, for sure, it eats through the glass.

Sodium hydroxide, in solid or solution form, will etch glass and eventually weaken it. Especially do not use glass stoppers with NaOH or they will freeze in place and cannot be removed.
