Why do the list of molecular polarities differ?
« on: November 06, 2010, 12:26:11 AM »

Taking the liquids:
2-Propanol
Water
Acetone

and placing them in order of increasing polarity using electronegativity we get:
2-propanol
water
acetone.

But! If we use their physical properties,
ex.: density, angle of deflection, flow rate, and boiling point
we get:
Acetone
2-Propanol
water

Why do the lists differ???

Additional Details
Polarity has an effect on the density, angle of deflection, flow rate, and the boiling point of a molecule. And here all these properties point to the polarity (in an order of increasing polarity) of the liquids having the fallowing order:
Acetone
2-Propanol
water

Instead of what was predicted by electronegativity:
2-propanol
water
acetone.

WHY IS THAT???

Physical Properties of Water(H2O), 2-propanol(CH3CHOHCH3), and Acetone([CH3]2CO):

Molar Mass:g/mol
Water: 18.02
2-propanol: 60.11
Acetone: 58.09

Boiling point: C
Water: 100
2-propanol: 86
Acetone: 58

Density: g/mL
Water: 1.00
2-propanol: 0.79
Acetone: 0.76

Average flow rate: ml/s
Water: 0.78
2-propanol: 0.87
Acetone: 0.95

Deflection by a charged object: degree
Water: 30
2-propanol: 20
Acetone: 10
