hydrolysis of sucrose
« on: November 21, 2010, 03:38:28 PM »
Hi guys,
So i got the K1 value for this reaction wich was done using HCL
Now i have to plot the graph of k1 vs H3O.
The pka of hcl is -7
what would be [H3O]

I know that [H3O]+ = [H]+

attempt :
pka= -logka= -7
logka= 7
ka=10^7
ka= x^2/ (3.0M - x) aprrox = x^2/3.0M
1.0 * 10^7 = x^2/3.0M

x= [H3O]

Well... HCl is a strong acid which means it dissociates completely in water. Your HCl molarity gives you [H3O+]. If you had a solution of 3.0M HCl, you have 3.0M of H3O+ ions. I don't know what you mean when you talk about the pKa of HCl.

Not exactly - that's only an approximation. Very good one for hydrochloric acid, but every acid has its own dissociation constant.

Thanks for the reply guys.
There was a pka given for hcl and That confused me so I thought I have to find the Ka from the pka value.

What would be the  significance of a linear plot in this kinetic analysis ?
