Any difference between these molecules? Please help
« on: December 13, 2010, 11:08:18 PM »
Hello All. I am trying to buy this medicine for my sick uncle. I am wondering if there is any difference between these two medicines Temodar and Temonat (why is there a 7 in front of the second one?? What does that mean? I just copied exactly the way it was printed, no dash just a space). Thanks so much, I really appreciate it, he really needs the right one.

3,4-dihydro-3-methyl-4-oxoimidazo[5,1-d]-as-tetrazine-8-carboxamide

7 3,4-dihydro-3-methyl-4-oxoimidazo[5,1-d]-as-tetrazine-8-carboxamide
Formula listed here --http://www.irxmedicine.com/products/pdf/Temonat.pdf

The 7,3,4 indicates the dihydro functional group is located on the 3rd,7th and 4th Carbon.

I could be wrong though, I'm just a High School Chemistry student ;D

Even the smallest changes in molecules can cause them to act totally differently.

In my personal view, buy the medicine prescribed.

Talk to a doctor or a pharmacist. We cannot tell you which is the right medicine.

No, "dihydro" isn't a functional group and if it was in three places it'd be "3,4,7-trihydro" instead of* "7,3,4-dihydro". The "hydro" tells you where double bonds have become single bonds (unsaturated ---> saturated). If it says "di" it can't be 3,4,7 the 7 will be something else.

Compared furan with dihydrofuran, for example.

Yea the thing is there is no comma after the 7. I don't know if that is a typo (lacking the comma), or the 7 could mean something else? I don't see any organic nomenclature with a number without a colon or comma, is that possible?

Thanks so much for your help so far.

They are the same thing, "TEMODAR Capsules for oral administration contain temozolomide" and "Temonant each capsule contains: Temozolomide". Make sure the milligrams are correct, or else the only difference should be by inactive ingredients (at least by U.S. FDA regulations).

it just an error they are just different generic of the same drug .

sure only the content of each capsules if your uncle take 5mg from one should get the same label for the alternate to fix the dose.

Still say go to a doc. I would not give someone a particular drug because of something found on the internet. Get verification, but not from here.

What if all the responses you get are wrong? Not saying they are, but I wouldn't hedge on anything, especially if someone is sick.

"7" is an evident printing error
