How is C2H4 planar?
« on: September 01, 2005, 07:41:35 PM »
I have a homework question that asks why is C2H4 planar and C2H6 is not, but aren't both of them linear?

They are both linear! :P
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.

C2H4 has a double bond between the carbon atoms, C2H6 has a single bond between the carbon atoms. Look up a general chemistry text for the rest of the answer.

sorry, maybe a silly question, but can C2H4 exist as staggered as well as the eclipsed conformation? wouldn't the staggered conformation be lower in energy and shouldn't it be the more predominant conformation.
