Acids and Bases
« on: December 26, 2010, 02:09:39 AM »
One mole of compound X gives three moles of ions in aqueous solution. X reacts with ammonium carbonate to give an acidic gas.

What is compound X?

A Calcium Hydroxide
B Ethanoic Acid
C Sodium Hydroxide
D Sulfuric Acid
~~~~~~~~~~~
I know the answer is D. Sulfuric acid. What I would like to know is why.
Your first hint will be this
One mole of compound X gives three moles of ions in aqueous solution.
Sulfuric acid is H2SO4 and one mole of sulfuric acid can give off two moles of H+.
Moreover the reaction of sulfuric acid with ammonium carbonate will be
(NH4)2CO3 + H2SO4  ::equil:: (NH4)2SO4 + CO2 + H2O
I roughly understand, but why can't it be the other options?
Try to write dissociation reactions for other cases, try to write reaction equations for other substances with ammonium carbonate. Do the results (number of ions, products) fit the description given?
