Co-distillation with perfluorocarbons
« on: December 28, 2010, 03:39:04 PM »
Hello everybody.

I would like to ask you a question about distillation.
If perfluorocarbons are inert, safe and have weak intermolecular forces, causing them not to mix with almost every compound, why aren't they used in a co-distillation process?
For example, couldn't we use a mixture of perfluorohexane and water to distill at app. 50 ÂșC and decant the mixture afterwards?

Thank you

Hi jusy1,

Perfluorocarbons are also potent greenhouse gases and have a long-term problem, as they have a life of up to 50,000 years.

I hope this helps,
