How to predict glycosidic bonds in disaccharides
« on: January 09, 2011, 06:01:05 AM »
How do you know what kinda glycosidic bond will form if 2 mono saccharides bond together? For example maltose has a beta(1,4) bond whereas sucrose has an alpha(1,2) bond. Do pyranoses always bond to other pyranoses with beta(1,4) bonds while pyranoses always bond to furanoses with alpha(1,2) bonds or something? Why does the anomeric carbon of glucose bond to carbon 4 or galactose? For example why wouldn't it bond to carbon 3? Also what determines which anomer of each saccharide is involved?
