when the Biginelli reaction is carried under solvent free conditions using Lewis acids, what does the Lewis acid do exactly?

Why wouldn't an acid catalyst do some serious damage to the rate of addition of urea to the aldehyde? Wouldn't urea sequester it? Otherwise, it seems like a great facilitator of the reaction.
