chlorine gas

why is chlorine gas so deadly.  i want to know if it is because it enters the mucus membranes of the eyes, nose, and throat and then starts ripping away at youre body to get last electron.  if this is true, what is the chlorine ripping apart to get last electron.  thanks for any *delete me*
