Oil companies pay a lot of money for PhD chemists to do all kinds of research and development. Not sure if they really use many PhD chemists on the off shore rigs, but they got plenty of other really good paying jobs.
You may actually make more money as labour on an offshore rig than as a phd chemist somewhere normal. Do as you wish.At least that is how it works on some remote alaskan rigs I know people on....
