You will have to buy or make 1-amino-1,2,3-triazole and react with sodium dichloroisocyanurate(pool chemical).  Pretty sure no one sells the actual compound as it is explosive (although not enough to really worry about handling it).

do you think that would be easy enough for a novice without a purpose built lab and if so where would i find instructions and components?

by the way thanks for the help.

Look up photochromic dyes

It is less sensitive than PETN.  Safe to handle with basic precautions...

Now this on the other hand  ;D http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/ic200071q  photochromic as well, except not as significant color change.

I enjoy trollin' people on the interwebs as much as the next man, but recommending explosive pigments to art students is kinda scratching the bottom of the barrel.

thanks for the comments. what im actually looking for is something that i could apply to a surface vie a pump and spray garden device, that would otherwise just look as though it was water but then after a short time in the sun appear as a colour. does this help narrow it down. also i should mention that i would prefer it not to stain.

I would recommend looking up "photochromic dye". These are compounds which react to light by changing their color. I believe there are commercial products available which do this.
