Redox
« on: July 12, 2011, 11:37:54 PM »
This is just a general question. If the atom does not change in oxidation number, can it still be counted as being oxidized?

2PbS (s) + 3O2(g) ---> 2PbO(s) + 2SO2(g)

In this case, the oxidation number for Pb is +2 on either side...BUT PbS is the reducing agent in this case, and Pb gains an O...

Is Pb oxidized?

No. The lead isn't changed. But what about the sulfur? Check it!
