What causes lots of strain and why?
What besides -CN causes little strain and why? What might these groups have in common?

That line of questioning may be a little misleading. It is more pertinent to ask how -CN differs from the other groups which show higher strain. Hint: make a model.

And put on all the hydrogens. Especially useful would be models of methyl and t-butyl substituents to compare to your cyano group.
