Magic numbers
« on: August 17, 2011, 08:06:42 AM »
This is a bonus question at our exam,... I'm curious and wants to know the answer because I always hear the same question: my answer to this question is -because the noble gasses are the most stable element in the periodic table- is this correct or wrong ???...
I want to learn.. tnx..
... The "magic numbers" in the periodic table are the atomic numbers of the elements with high stability. These are the atomic numbers of the noble gases. In terms of allowed values of orbitals and quantum numbers, explain why these electron arrangements correspond to special stability....

If someone wants to add extra info... millions of tnx and hugs...

You might want to look up the octet rule and also as the question asks you to refer to the quantum number and orbitals can you relate them to the noble gases?

Your reasoning is in the right spirit...

The noble gases are especially stable because certain electron configurations are especially stable due to a full valence shell. Nuclei also have certain configurations with high stability due to complete nuclear shells. These especially stable nuclei though are not the noble gases. The noble gases are stable with respect to chemical reactivity, not nuclear reactivity. The 'magic numbers' correspond to certain nuclei which are especially stable to nuclear reactions (radioactive decay).
