simple help??? New at this quantum stuff..
« on: September 17, 2011, 09:53:53 PM »
Ok my prof has issued a homework question of ..the following
For the harmonic oscillator we have

H(Psi) = h/2m stuff d^2/dx^2 Psi(x) + stuff = E Psi

Using the substitution  x=ay simplify the above
Schrödinger equation as much as you can.

My only question is this....is there something that I must do with Psi(x)??

I assume there must...other wise I just get an ay term with the Psi's..

I just need help in knowing what to do with the psi(x)....don't do the math.

Don't omit "stuff" from your post. It just happens that the "stuff" is easily identifiable, but try not to omit it.

This is an eigenvalue problem. Psi is just a function of x, it is your eigenfunction. H operating on Psi gives Psi multiplied by a constant. This constant is E.

As you asked not to do the math, the preceding information should suffice for you to find the solution.

If you're still having problems, ask yourself this question: what function would give itself multiplied by a constant as its second derivative?
