Can I make a strong ammonia solution, say 20%, from ammonium chloride? It imagine it has to react with something to turn it alkaline. Been a long time since chemistry lessons.

If you add a base that is stronger than ammonia (e.g. NaOH), you will generate ammonia from ammonium chloride, as well as a salt - so you can make a salty ammonia solution.
NH
4
Cl(aq) + NaOH(aq)
NH
3
(aq) + H
2
O(l) + NaCl(aq)

Thanks for the reply Dan.
I have some ammonium chloride and was hoping to help turn it into a a copper dissolving mixture to clean gun barrels. It obviously must not harm the barrel.
Cheers

You can produce ammonia (gas) and you mix NH4Cl and Ca(OH)2 and heat it. Lead the gas into water and you'll have a ammonia solution.
