Suitability of ingredients in an IV mixture
« on: October 01, 2011, 09:15:18 PM »
The question states these ingredients:

10mg active ingredient (what it is, not stated, so I don't think this is needed to solve the question)
80mg sodium citrate
0.5mL ethanol
10mg FDandC red
NaOH (to adjust pH of solution to blood pH of 7.4)
water 10mL (as vehicle for the drug for injection)

How do I know if the combination of these will produce a suitable IV injection?  What factors do I have to look at?  Can someone get me started on the right track?  Thanks.

I'm just bewildered that a substance for injection would be colored with FD&C red.  If you're going to inject it, why color it?  Just because its cleared for food, that may mean it digests into safe compounds, or doesn't leave the digestive system, not that its a safe inject-able.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

i think this is just a theory question, but lol yeah at the inclusion of food coloring...

hm although it is a suitable answer... let's say if the question didn't include FD&C red, what do you look at next?
