Intersystem crossing

For phosphorescence to occur, an excited electron must, by the process of intersystem crossing, transfer to the triplet state. However, a pretty apparent observation is that only a few compounds phosphoresce. Therefore, there must be different probabilities of intersystem crossing for different molecules. Please, could someone give me some help in understanding this; why are some molecules more apt to allow intersystem crossing?
