Heating a [Co(H2O)6]Cl2 solution
« on: November 14, 2011, 05:35:24 PM »
Hey everyone, i´m new here so im not sure if this is the right place to post this, but it turns out i made laboratory practice where i needed to heat a piece of paper with an aqueous [Co(H2O)6]Cl2 solution (which is pink as a liquid but in the paper turns invisible since its a really light pink), and what happens is that when you heat the paper, it turns blue because the compound dehydrates.  I did this with three different types of paper (filter, toilette, and a notebook sheet) and they are asking me to explain why did i get different results with the different types of paper and the thing is I DONT KNOW, because to me, the same thing happened the tree different times i made it, i mean, the solution turned blue when i heated it and turned colourless as soon as i took it off the flame, but aparently there are differences depending on the type of paper and i have no idea of which are they... Is there anyone who could please help me out with this? im lost and i need help ASAP since i have to turn in this paper tomorrow.. THANKS!

Well, since its an experiment, the result you got is the result you should report.  Write it with care, describing exactly what happens each time, and maybe some minor difference will jump out at you.  At least you'll have done what you're supposed to do, report and draw conclusions.  If you can conclude there as no difference, you will at least get partial credit for following the correct forms for reporting.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.
