Need help with chemistry problem
« on: November 16, 2011, 08:22:06 PM »
I am doing a review sheet for my test tomorrow and i am not sure about this question
CoCl4 + 6H2O  ::equil:: Co(H2O)6 + 4Cl

The question is asking:
Explain how you determined the colour of each of the cobalt ion complexes. I am aware that CoCl4 is blue and Co(H2O)6 is pink but i do not know how you determine it. Help would be appreciated. Thanks!

If you add water the solution will turn pink. This is because the position of Eqm will shift to right hand side to use up the excess water forming Co(H2O)6.
