Neutralizing a dilute HCl solution
« on: December 04, 2011, 02:56:37 AM »
What would be the best approach if you have have a 20% HCl in water solution containing a dissolved product that you must basify first then evaporate to recrystallize the product

I'm not sure what chemical to use to neutralize the acid (strong or weak base, which one)

Will a salt form when you mix in the base to neutralize the acid

I think a salt will definitely form when you mix them. If the salt formed is insoluble while your product is soluble then you can just separate them by filtration and then evaporate your product to recrystallize
