projection of rocksalt structure
« on: January 22, 2012, 02:26:34 PM »
can someone post a pic of the rocksalt projection for me plz.

we have to draw it on the ab plane, and label the c (z) height.

i know how to draw it 3d with Cl in each corner and face centre then Na the octahedra positions (ie. in the centre of each line)
but when i go to draw it on the ab plane i get really confused.

i've got this - which shows al my corners and then the 2 oxgyens on the top and bottom face, but i dont know how to place the Na's

The Na and Cl atoms stack up on top of each other in the c axis, I guess this is what is making the representation difficult to grasp. The normal way of doing it is:

In this diagram, the 0 and 1 labels are implicit and have not been specified - i.e. if there is a Cl at 0.5, then there are Na atoms at 0 and at 1. If there is a Na at 0.5 there are Cl atoms at 0 and 1.
