Grade 11 Chemistry Exam- HELP?
« on: January 26, 2012, 01:55:57 AM »
So my exam is coming up soon and I was wondering if you guys could help me with making my notes.
For the exam we're allowed to have a 8.5x11cm as like a sheet and we can put anything on it. ex. formula's, notes, definitions.
In the exam we will be given a periodic table, electronegativity, solubility chart, and metal activity series

Can you guys help me build mine?
Here are my units:
1)
a)periodic trends- atomic radius, ionization energy, electron negativity
b) Molecular vs. Ionic- lewis diagram, bond type, structure, (delta) EN (difference in electronegativity), repulsion theory shapes
c) naming/ writing formulas- binary, ionic, polyatomic, acids&bases, multivalent ionic, molecular

2)
writing chemical equations- word, skeleton, balanced equations
types of reactions- synthesis, decomposition, combustion, single displacement, double displacement
predicting products in chemical reactions
slint test for H2(g), O2(g), CO2(g)
characteristics of incomplete/complete combustion
solubility rules, activity series

3)
N,n,M | N, n, NA
law of definite proportions
mass percent/ percentage composition
empirical formula
hydrates
limiting and excess reactants
percentage yield
factors affecting yield
c,n,C

There's so many to put on its hard to pinpoint unless I print everything out in number 1 font and bring a magnifying glass with me  :P

All suggestions are appreciated  :) Thanks in advance.

You pose an interesting question :)! Here's my 2 cents worth. It seems you cannot fit everything onto this piece of paper as you have stated. What I recommend is firstly deciding what things you are confident on and what you are not. Will the exam be multiple choice or short/long anwer type questions? Some of those things you have stated, like lewis diagram, bond type, structure, repulsion theory shapes etc... I think these things can be learned and you don't need to rely on a piece of paper for this. As for what you should put onto the paper, that is really up to you, how confident are you on these topics that are going to be in the test? How much preparation have you done? Of course, things like formulae you should put on (unless they are drilled into your head), as well as other things which require memory, such as characteristics of incomplete/complete combustion. You may say that chemistry is all about memory so I am sort of contradicting myself here :P

The exam format is 30marks- multiple choice 15- marks matching and 81-marks short answer which is most likely on mass percentage, limiting reactants, percentage yield, and concentration. But those are easy to memorize due the the fact that it's all formulas.
I've been I think I done a pretty good amount of studying its the practice that I need to work on more, know any places where I can practice writing types of reactions (synthesis to double displacement, unit 2) and unit 3, so mass percentage, limiting reactants, percentage yield, and concentration?
To me chemistry is more like math which I enjoy more. I rather find the percentage yield of an compound rather than memorize the the use of one's colon or why darwin didn't shave his beard, not to bash bio, but its not my cup of tea.
