Is this not a meso compound? And hence optically inactive!

look here   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meso_compound

Development Chemists do it on Scale, Research Chemists just do it!

There was no determining whether meso compound or optically inactive.

Start at the beginning - how many chiral centers do you have in the molecule? How many total diastereomers would you expect from that many chiral centers?

Now draw those out, and see if any would be identical to their mirror images (internal symmetry).

Not all of the stereoisomers are meso, some are chiral.
