Adsorption of NH3 on CaCl2
« on: February 11, 2012, 07:19:19 AM »
1)What is the chemical reaction that will happen when NH3 is adsorbed on CaCl2? Where can I get the detailed basics about the equilibrium and kinetics of this pair?
2)Will it form a complex compound CaCl2.8NH3 during adsorption and CaCl2+8NH3 during desorption?
3)How can I improve the adsorption rate and avoid swelling and agglomeration of CaCl2?
4)What will be the change if I use anhydrous powder of CaCl2,CaCl2 crystals or CaCl2 solution?

I am not a chemical Engg person but from Mechanical engg working on chemical engg problem. So please frogive me if I have committed any mistake in framing the question.

According to a reference I was able to find, but not able to read, srry, calcium chloride forms a series of adducts :  CaCl2. NH3, CaCl2.2NH3, CaCl2.4NH3 and CaCl2.8NH3.  Its hard to know, which you'll get, and when.  And that will affect the answers to your questions.  I'd bet though, the best results will be maximum surface area of anhydrous powder, instead of solution, unless crystals allow for better ammonia gas percolation.

Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.
