Pinacol Rearrangement w/ Iodine - Searched but no answer found

In the pinacol rearrangement, in my case specifically benzopinacol Ph2-C(OH)-C(OH)-Ph2
 a trace amount of I2 is added. I know I2 is a weak Lewis Acid and that this property comes into action. Where during the mechanism would iodine be able to accept electrons from something?

I too had wondered about this. Perhaps we should think of this equilibrium.

pyridinium bromide + Br2  ::equil:: pyridinium tribromide

What might I2 do?
