Need help with organic polymer assignment (silicones)
« on: March 15, 2012, 09:27:01 PM »
I got to compare two polymers by  discussing the productivity of an item.
For each polymer I have to provide info on: names, drawings of monomers and polymer, reaction(as in polymerization process), intermolecular forces, properties, and properties in relation to intermolecular forces..

my item is a spatula.. The item is not so much important its mainly about comparing two polymers. My polymers are Silicones and SBS rubber...

So far I've figured that silicones is a family of organic polymers. and according to http://www.pslc.ws/mactest/silicone.htm Polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) are the specific silicones used for elastomers.. but I'm up to the bit where you have to write about the reaction.. and thats where I need help... its monomer is octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane and idk how to go about writing it...

Try this:

http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1004954107601426

Cationic Ring Opening Polymerization of Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane Initiated by Acid Treated Bentonite*Bi CHEN, Xiaoli ZHAN, , Lingmin YI, Fengqiu CHEN
Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering
Volume 15, Issue 5, October 2007, Pages 661–665

Among other things, it has a nice list of references to other papers on octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane polymerization reactions.
