Start Gas, Liquid Or Gas
« on: March 24, 2012, 09:58:23 AM »
This may be the dumbest question ever but here it goes. I am home mixing fuel for my little model diesel engine, and one of the ingredients are ether and Ive heard that start gas contains ether, now my question is, if i spray the start gas in a cup will it all evaporate or will it fill the cup with liquid ether? If not, where else could i obtain liquid ether?  ???

have you had a chance to look up the boiling point of ether

Unless you leave it sitting around for a while, you shouldn't have to worry about evaporation.

@blaisem

Dimethyl ether
 CH3-O-CH3
 boiling point -23.0 C
Diethyl ether
 CH3CH2-O-CH2CH3
 boiling point  34.4 C

I looked up starter gas fluid and saw that diethyl ether was the ether involved.  Then I looked up the same boiling point.  I think I misinterpreted the question.  I thought he was going to buy some diethyl ether and mix it in a cup with something else to make his own gas.  Rereading his question, I think I got that wrong.  Sorry if I made a mistake.  If I had known, I wouldn't have posted.

I just read an article where they compared the rate of evaporation of water v.s. Diethyl ether. Evaporation of water was nearly 0.5 grams per hour and Di-ethyl ether was about 5.0 grams per hour in what appeared to be a typical room environment. Evaporation is related to vapor pressure.

So maybe I should have mentioned vapor pressure and not just boiling point.

Here is part WIKIs discussion of vapor pressure
Quote
The equilibrium vapor pressure is an indication of a liquid's evaporation rate.
and
Quote
As a general trend, vapor pressures of liquids at ambient temperatures increase with decreasing boiling points.

--------------
So the answer to the original post would be that the liquid that collected from spaying into the cup would readily evaporate. Also note, that the process of spraying would assist in some evaporation.

My hint to john lcoke about boiling point was a little too obtuse and so was my response to blaisem.

It might benefit john lcoke to read
