How to get ride of Ph3PO?
« on: November 12, 2005, 06:33:34 AM »
Hello.

I have done this reaction :

HOOC-RCH=CH2 + O3 / Ph3P , then, in one pot, Ph3P=CHCOOEt.

And after my chromatography colum, I still have Ph3PO in my purified product! I don't understand why... because I have a RF of 0.4 for my product and 0 for Ph3PO...

So... how can I get ride of this triphenylphosphine oxid?

Thank you

Faust

Its everywhere. I've seen it up to 2 synthetic steps beyond when I've first used it.
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.

What about if use Triphenylphosphine polymer bounded reagent on filled reaction column. Then no free Ph3PO in your product i guess.

reduce the oxide and try to precipitate the ph3po?

Ph3PO is easy to crystalize from ethylacetate, before doing column, using ethylacetate to get rid of most of your Ph3PO. It is a trick I used in Mitsunobu reaction work up.

how do you do that? It seems to be soluble in ethyl acetate... because I eluted my column with 100% of AcOEt, and when I evapored the AcOEt I got my final product and cristals of Ph3PO...

Can you distill your product away from the phosphine oxide?
