Glycerol and CaCl2+H2O
« on: April 06, 2012, 09:23:48 AM »
Which would be the reaction when glycerol is added in a water solution of CaCl2?
If CaCl2 + H2O would give HCl + Ca(OH)2 ... what would happen when glycerol is added?

Nothing!

Can not be nothing... there must be any reaction... whatever  ::)

Why must there be a reaction?
What do you think happens?
Try balancing your reaction equation:

Try balancing your reaction equation:

CaCl2 + 2H2O = 2HCl + Ca(OH)2
what when HOCH2-CHOH-CH2OH is added to that 2HCl + Ca(OH)2
maybe Cl from HCl will react with OH from glycrol or something like that ??? or maybe not ???

Speculative: if the HCl protonates one of the terminal alcohols then water will eliminate to give an enol, which will tautomerise to the corresponding ketone.
This constitutes an oxidation!
You do not have oxidizing conditions, therefore I repeat nothing will happen upon adding glycerol.
