What's the insulating in houses made of?

Some are made of PVC. Polyuretane is also quite common. No idea of other examples, though.

A great, great, great deal of it is made out of fiberglass.

The big slabs which line lofts are made out of 'rockwool'.  This is mineral rock turned into wool!


They have molten mineral rock which gets dripped onto spinners which project the melt through the air.  It cools into long fibres which get pressed down into what they call rockwool.

there is a specific kind of foam that is being used in modern development, do not recall what it called, but maybe someone else does, but you apply it and it will actually expand filling all the space, has a great efficiency as insulation material for a home, but i heard that its quite a bit expensive.

That's how polyuretanes behave, And they are too expensive just for the whole building insulation, thus they are rather used to insulate widnows and doors when mounting.
