IUPAC naming help
« on: October 14, 2012, 10:23:43 PM »
Hi...I have this compound here and I have two different ways of naming it. Which one is correct by the IUPAC norms?

CH3-C-(C2H5)2-CH2Br

I got these two:
1-bromo 2,2-diethyl propane
2-bromomethyl 2-methyl pentane

Which one is right, and why?

Neither according to ChemDraw, it's 3-(bromomethyl)-3-methylpentane.

Neither according to ChemDraw, it's 3-(bromomethyl)-3-methylpentane.

So, does that mean you're supposed to take the longest possible carbon chain, and not necessarily the longest chain holding the functional group?

Yes, you take the longest carbon chain.
