Fluorescent enhancement of interchelating dyes
« on: October 21, 2012, 09:56:50 AM »
Hi,

Does anyone know why fluorescent is enhanced when certain dyes interchelate with DNA? How does stacking with the DNA base pair exactly effect the electronics of the dye that leads to enhanced fluorescence?

:S

Thanks,

Nescafe.

The  intercalating dyes (interchelating would be a different thing entirely, assuming it exists) such as ethidium bromide have florescence enhancement with double stranded DNA by a number of mechanisms, outlined here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethidium_bromide#Structure.2C_chemistry.2C_fluorescence
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.
