Measuring intensity of colour

Consider the following reaction :

[tex]NO_2(g)+CO(g)\rightarrow CO_2(g)+NO(g)[/tex].

My text states that the rate of the reaction can be measured by measuring the change in the intensity of colour(of nitrogen dioxide) in the gaseous mixture in a given interval of time.

Question:How is that practically done in a laboratory?Thanks!
I am horrible at chemistry.I am always liable to fail my chemistry exams.So, sorry for stupid questions.

Do the reaction in the cuvette, or measure absorbance of the samples taken from the reacting mixture.
