Question about chemical formula
« on: November 08, 2012, 01:22:21 PM »
Hi, Guys!
I am not a chemist, so I don't know what is a formulae of the following chemical substances:
1) piv
2) μ3-naph
3) μ2_naph
4) η2-naph
5) μ2-naph
6)phen
7)bpy
8) η-naph
I guess that "bpy" is bipyridine, "naph" is a naphtalene, "phen" is a phenol, but what do these additionals η and μ with subscript and superscript indices mean?
Thnaks in advance.

"phen" is more likely phenanthroline I think... The μ and η tell you about the coordination modes to metal ions. So η4 implies the metal is bonded to 4 carbon atoms of a ligand say, and μ2 implies the ligand bridges 2 metal atoms.
