Redox problem help
« on: November 10, 2012, 04:01:48 PM »
Write net equations for the spontaneous redox reactions that occur during the following or none if there is no extensive reaction.

Manganese metal is added to a MgSO4 solution
NONE (RIGHT)

Copper metal is added to hydrochloric acid
2H^1+ +Cu -> H2 +Cu^2+ (WRONG)

A silver wire is added to nitric acid
2H^1+ + 2Ag -> H2 + 2Ag^1+ (WRONG)

Magnesium metal is added to water
Mg +H2O -> H2 + MgO (WRONG)

Can some one help me with the last three? I cant figure out how to do them :(
I basically tried using the half reactions but it wasnt right...

The two first answers are correct. Number 3 something else happend. Number 4 think again. How it is wrote your answer is right, but correct it.

Maybe use google and others by yourself. Silver get oxidiesed by nitric acid. Earth alkali metalls will form Hydroxide in aqueous solution. Copper is to noble to react with hydrochloric.

Copper metal is added to hydrochloric acid
2H^1+ +Cu -> H2 +Cu^2+ (WRONG)

Copper is not oxidized by H+, check reactivity series.

2H^1+ + 2Ag -> H2 + 2Ag^1+ (WRONG)

See above, you need a stronger oxidizing agent than H+.

What happens when metal oxides are added to water?
