Purity of CHCL_3
« on: November 13, 2012, 01:51:05 PM »
How would you test the purity of [itex]CHCl_3[/itex]?
Thanks,I have no idea how to go about it.
I am horrible at chemistry.I am always liable to fail my chemistry exams. So, sorry for stupid questions.

This is not exactly an answer to your question, but commercial CHCl3 often has stabilizers present.  Is that what your concern is?

Since it is a question from a school paper,I think they want a chemical process which works theoretically.Either way, I am having a lot of difficulty understanding how to go about it.

To some degree the best method to look for an impurity depends upon the impurity.  What would the gas chromatograms of a pure versus impure CHCl3 look like?  What would the H-1 NMR spectra look like?

Topics like NMR spectra were not taught at school. So I cannot use it. :(

The only thing that comes to my mind is chloroform test;but I do not know why.

Perhaps,an indirect chemical method...

Are you familiar with gas chromatography at all?  That seems to be the method used in this link:

No,i am not familiar with gas chromatography. It is not in the syllabus and I will not get any credit in the exam if I give a solution based on it.

Elemental Analysis?

If that doesn't work, I'm afraid you're going to have to tell us what IS in your syllabus. Right now we're playing a game of "Guess what number I'm thinking of...nope...nope...nope..."
