uncertainty principle
« on: November 14, 2012, 05:04:28 AM »
Calculate the minimum uncertainty in the position of a golf ball (45.93 grams). Velocity of the golf ball = 83.0 m/s

ans: 1.38 x 10^(-35) m

I know I need to find the uncertainty in momentum first, but how?

thx

What is the definition of momentum?

What is the definition of momentum?

mass x velocity, but how can I know delta delta(momentum) from those 2 numbers?

I know the mathematical statement of it, but i just don't  know how to find the uncertainty in momentum from those 2 numbers

You can either know the position, or the momentum exactly, but not both at the same time. The mininum uncertainty in the product of the two  is given by ħ/2. Here you know momentum exactly (certainty 1), so what is the minimum uncertainty in the position?
