Electronegativity and Bond Dissociation Energy questions
« on: November 25, 2012, 03:54:55 PM »
Hey guys, I dont know how to do these questions. Could I get some help?

1) Describe Pauling's method of determining the electronegativity difference [Xa - Xb] between elements A and B in a diatomic molecule A-B based on bond dissociation energies. Comment on electronegativity trends across the periodic table.

2) Based on these values for electronegativity and bond dissociation energies:

Dhh = 436 kJ/mol
Dff = 159 kJ/mol
X (H) = 2.20; X (F) = 3.98

predict the bond dissociation energy of hydrogen fluoride. Compare this value with that obtained assuming an entirely covalent H-F bond.
