LeChatelier's Principle
« on: December 01, 2012, 12:21:09 AM »
CaCO3 (s)  ::equil::CaO(s) + CO2(g)
The above reaction is thermal decomposition of calcium3 carbonate and reaction is carried out in closed vessel. What happens to the equilibrium when we add CaCO3?

Thanks for the answers

What do you think happens?

When we add calcium carbonate it should not actually  bring about a change in the position of equilibrium because its a solid. But i was told it was wrong... so ...

I think I agree with you.

reaction takes place in the backward direction...
Kc = no. of moles of carbon dioxide/ volume
when we add calcium carbonate the volume decreases therefore Kc value increases. In order to restore the Kc value a/c to Le-chatelier's principle reaction takes place in back ward direction... hope i am right. correct me if am wrong

Guess you could say that in theory. You'd have to put a lot of the solid in to cause an appreciable change in pressure like that.
