Work up procedures for aromatic sulfonation
« on: January 22, 2013, 08:18:21 AM »
Hi, I performed a sulphonation of an aromatic compound with conc. H2SO4. I have a question on the work up procedures for the aromatic sulphate. Shall I do liquid liquid extraction. Will Ar-SO3H dissolve in dichloromethane?

I tried to added NaOH solution to my crude product. It slowly gave out precipitates, but i am not sure if I am doing it correctly. Will there be a possibility that I cannot separate my product (Ar-SO3- Na+) from the inorganic salt Na2SO4 that also formed due to neutralization of H2SO4 ?

Thx! :)
