Question: Strawberries contain 12wt% solids and 88wt% water, to make strawberry jam, crushed strawberries and sugar are mixed in a 45:55 mass ratio, and the mixture is heated to evaporate water. after evaporation the jam contains 1/3 water by mass
1. complete a degree of freedom analysis
2. how many kg of strawberries are needed to make 1kg of jam

this is what i have, i' am just wondering if this is right

for questions 1. there are 3 unknowns-2 balances-1(45:55mass ratio)=0
for part2.
Eq1: m1(.12)+m2=.667
Eq2. m1(.88)=m4+.333
Eq3. m1/m2=45/55

so i took eq3 m1=(45m2)/55 into equation 1 to give me (45m2/55)(.12)+m2=.667 were m2=.607
so then i took m2 into equation 3 to give me m1=(45/55)(.607)=.497 so therefore there would be .497kg needed to make 1kg jam, does this seem right??

Won't hurt if you would explain meaning of the symbols you used and what you are doing.
