Why doesn't exist 2-butanone, anhydrous?
« on: February 04, 2013, 08:09:21 AM »
Hi, I'm finding 2-butanone, anhydrous solvent.

It is important to use the anhydrous solvent which doesn't contain the water molecules.

However, I have never seen the anhydrous solvent of 2-butanone.

Can't it exist?

You can get it <0.1% water - HPLC grade is pretty dry. Example.

What are you using it for? Does it need to be drier than that?

@beapkman: Distill it by yourself lazy fellow. For research purpose and small scale I always would recommend tom purify/dry the things on your own to be on the safe side. A well-trained chemist should know how to do this.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Is there any way to purify the solvent?

All I know is just to boil the solvent until the water vapor is evaporated.

However, the b.p of 2-butanone is just about 80.

You can purify it by distillation, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distillation
There is a picture of the apparatus you can use.
Development Chemists do it on Scale, Research Chemists just do it!

80 = 100 - 20
