Need to make an Alkyne
« on: February 16, 2013, 04:35:55 PM »
Hi,

So I need to make an alkyne in lab and I have a few options as starting material. Which one is the easiest to start with?  Basically I need to synthesize 1-cyclohexyl-4-ethynylbenzene and I can start with either one of these readily available SMs.

Cyclohexylbenzoic acid
(4-cyclohexylphenyl)methanol
or 4'-Cyclohexylacetophenone

I know for alkynes you typically need bromine usually for bromination but I was wondering if there are any alternatives I might not know about.

Thanks,

Nescafe.

In one of the above compounds you have a complete carbon skeleton

Okay, not very helpful though, but thanks! =)

Put some effort in yourself. Get a book off the shelf or google alkyne synthesis. You have been here long enough to know that we are not going to drop the answer in your lap (Forum Rules).
