balancing chemical equations
« on: January 28, 2006, 04:12:58 PM »
I for the life of me cannot figure out how to balance these equations.  Can anyone help me?!?!  Is it possible that an equation can't be balanced?

C4H8(OH)2 + H2O2 --> C4H6O2 + H2O

Na2O2 + H2O -->  NaOH + O2

HNO3  -->  NO2 + H2O +O2

I did try to work these out.  I had a set of 100 problems to balance and these were the only ones I couldn't get.  Every time I end up with a fraction on one side I cannot figure out how to balance the fraction on the other side.

All three are relatively simple and can be balanced. Show what you did and where you get stuck.

There are reactions that can't be balanced, but that's not the case.

2Na2O2 + 2H2O -->  4NaOH + O2

4HNO3  -->  4NO2 + 2H2O + O2

The first one looked like it would be too hard so I didnt bother, sorry.

I don't think the first one is possible to balance, quite frankly.  Are you sure you posted it correctly?

Are you talking about this one Byrne? C4H8(OH)2 + H2O2 --> C4H6O2 + H2O

Or did I make a mistake balancing?

My bad.  I meant the very first one the original poster provided.  Yours look great to me.

Don't do homework for others.

C4H8(OH)2 + 2H2O2 --> C4H6O2 + 4H2O

a= 2 (1)   C - 4a=4c
b= 4 (2)      (a=c)
c= 2 (1)   H - 10a + 2b = 6c + 2d
d= 8 (4)
                      O - 2a + 2b = 2c + d
Check:
   4 Carbon on each side
   14 Hydrogen on each side
   8 Oxygen on each side

      It checks!!  ;D
