Quantum Chemisty Rigid Rotor possible angle problem
« on: March 10, 2013, 08:26:02 PM »
4.  Consider a rigid rotor which has
J=2 as one of its quantum numbers.

a.  What are the possible angles between J and the z axis for this rigid rotor?

b.  What are the possible eigenvalues of the operators (if any) for Lx^2, Ly^2, Lx^2+Ly^2

I am really not sure how to solve this problem, Any insight on it please! it would be much appreciated.

I know it's hard to show "work" with a problem like this, but you should describe your thought process.  Although, (a) doesn't really make a whole lot of sense the way it is written.  J is just a quantum number.  I think what the question is asking is: what is the angle between the J-dependent procession of the rotor around the z-axis, and the z-axis.
