What is the monomer unit of the polymer called nylon?
« on: March 20, 2013, 07:30:20 PM »

I got part B and part C wrong even though I googled both of them -.-
Here is the youtube video (which doesn't really help): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y479OXBzCBQ&feature=related

For B you have drawn a diamine, the question asks for amide groups.
For C I found polyglycolide on Google as well as polyglycolic acid.

NC(=O)CCCCC(N)=O

^ I drew this and it still marked it as incorrect :(

Your chain is too short.

CC(NCCCCCCNC(C)=O)=O

Wait but isn't that supposed to be for A though? Or is that for B?
Because A is supposed to be a super long structure

That is for B,
For A just draw in the other part for two units.

You mean draw the combination of 1,6-diaminohexane and hexanedioic?

No you have an extra oxygen atom in there. And the CH3 at the left should be an OH.

NCCCCCCNCC(=O)CCCCC(=O)O

That?

Awesome! :D thanks!!!

I have one more quick question - what exactly is product A for the question below? I haven't submitted this structure yet (which is why the X is grey) but I have one more submission left:

This is an ester hydrolysis with sodium hydroxide

OC(C(C)C)=O
and
OC1CCCCC1

After H3O+ treatment they are probably not deuterated.
