This is part of a longer rx but I'll just post the part where I'm stuck:



I don't really understand what Pyr.HCl is doing. Could anyone explain the mechanism of this reaction to me? Before the synthesis of dehydroequol.

It's not used in catalytic amounts in this reaction. The H+ protonates and the chloride acts as a nucleophile.
