Salt Crystals
« on: June 30, 2004, 12:47:10 PM »
I have started a salt crystal making project where I'm going to grow as many near-perfect crystals as I can. I'm not sure where to start so I decided to start by using a low concentration of hydrochloric acid and some metals or metal hydroxides. I'm not really that experienced in chemistry and I don’t know what compounds are toxic and what I can buy without having to make them.

HCl + LiOH => LiCl + H2O
HCl + NaOH => NaCl + H2O
HCl + KOH => KCl + H2O
I can get NaCl and KCl as salt and No-Salt.

2 HCl + Be => BeCl2 + H2
2 HCl + Mg => MgCl2 + H2
2 HCl + 2 CaOH => 2 CaCl2 + 2 H2O + H2
I can get CaCl as a moisture absorbent.

2 HCl + Mn => MnCl2 + H2
2 HCl + Tc => TcCl2 + H2
2 HCl + Re => ReCl2 + H2

2 HCl + Fe => FeCl2 + H2

2 HCl + Co => CoCl2 + H2
2 HCl + Rh => RhCl2 + H2

2 HCl + Ni => NiCl2 + H2
2 HCl + Pd => PdCl2 + H2

2 HCl + 2 Cu => 2 CuCl + H2
2 HCl + 2 Ag => 2 AgC + H2
6 HCl + 2 Au => 2 AuCl3 + 3 H2

2 HCl + Zn => ZnCl2 + H2

6 HCl + 2 Al => 2 AlCl3 + 3 H2

2 HCl + Sn => SnCl2 + H2

2 HCl + Pb => PbCl2 + H2

Here is some nice salt crystals I made but the camera isn’t really made for close up.

Nice crystals. Just make sure you use golves those hydroxides can burn.
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
3. Forum Supports LaTex

Thanks, I actually made them accidentally.   :P

I don't need to handle the hydroxides, sodium chloride is pure enough in table salt for crystals and I bought a bottle of No-Salt which is mostly potassium chloride, calcium chloride is used for a drying agent and lithium hydroxide is formed when I put the lithium in water (pretty sure).

I skipped a lot of the salts I could have made because of reactivity, toxicity, cost, or corrosion resistance. If you see any of the salts I could add or remove because of this please tell me because I don't really know much about chemistry but I would like to do a major project.

This is just a rough draft of the reactions I would like to do for the project.

I can guarantee you that you will not be making any Tc salts.  Technetium is a fairly radioactive metal and you'd have to get all kinds of licenses to get ahold of the pure metal or its salts, and then the cost would be through the roof.  So you can delete that one.   ;)

Is there any I can add? And how do I figure out the solubility?

you missed out on copper sulphate .It makes great crystals when you make it properly and even better they are blue (though you can make blue sodium chloride crystals and anyother colourless ones by adding blue food colouring).Ihave attached a picture of a good way on how to make copper sulphate crystals

Try KAl(SO4)2 and CuSO4
Yoy did many errors in your equations, eg
2 HCl + 2 CaOH => 2 CaCl2 + 2 H2O + H2
should be
2 HCl + Ca(OH)2 => CaCl2 + 2 H2O
Pd, Rh, Pb, Cu, Ag and Au do not react with HCl
I doubt if you have Tc, Pd, Rh or Re
Be careful with berylium. It is extremely toxic
